Name: Susan Clark
Title of work: Edge of Focus

1.      Tell us about your work in VAM 35. Give us an idea of the conceptual framework you used in creating this piece. What inspired it? Why did you choose to use that particular medium? Why that particular perspective, set of colours, subject matter, etc.

It’s odd to think of living 24 floors up. Your mind accepts this floating reality as normal; it is no longer unusual. Yet what a wonderful environment. Your sense of reality and vision is enforced with the changing elements. Weather patterns and shifting light patterns constantly force you to focus. An inspiration for a creative piece which invites the viewer to also ponder. Simplicity. A glimpse.

2.      How would you describe your creative process? How has your style changed since you started, and what do you think is the reason behind the change?

I used 3 panels for this piece to create a very narrow vertical atmosphere to enforce the height of the tall building. Each panel focuses on the images you are trying to define: the building, the railing and the glass. I prefer to work in oils where such subtleties can be achieved in blending and colour. Soft blends of colour complement and contrast the crisp edges and lines. While using masking tape, they still remain quite painterly. My subject matter usually reflects the places around me.

3.      If time and money were no object, what artistic project would you like to undertake? What about this project fascinates you, and how do you think it will engage the viewer?

If time and money were no object…

I would quit my day job, paint endlessly and travel across Canada photographing, sketching and collecting images to use in future works. The subject matter would be endless. Sometimes the simplest images become icons that each of us can relate to.
