1. Tell us about your work in VAM 35. Give us an idea of the conceptual framework you used in creating this piece. What inspired it? Why did you choose to use that particular medium? Why that particular perspective, set of colours, subject matter, etc.
I titled my painting ” Anywhere ” because it could be anywhere in north America or Europe. I have painted many scenes of abandoned, boarded up, and run down buildings and also interior scenes. The industrial landscape interests me, factory chimneys, warehouses, and canals etc: I find a certain beauty in these subjects and I like their shapes and colours. I like to paint in watercolour, because I can build up gradually the colour tones to achieve depth and feeling in the painting.
2. How would you describe your creative process? How has your style changed since you started, and what do you think is the reason behind the change?
Drawing has always been very important to me, I usually spend 1-2 days on the drawing before I begin to paint. I like to use watercolour for the reasons mentioned above. I think as I get older my work has matured more and has become more detailed.
3. If time and money were no object, what artistic project would you like to undertake? What about this project fascinates you, and how do you think it will engage the viewer?
I just want to continue to paint subjects that interest and inspire me and to constantly challenge myself in the watercolour medium.
