Eileen Menzel, Inside that Space

Eileen Menzel, Inside that Space, mixed media, 104 x 79 cm, $1500

1. Tell us about the artwork you have in the VAM 2011 Juried Show.

Inside That Space began from the model in John Leonard’s weekly Master Life Painting class 7 months  ago. It has been worked on consistently since then and most intensely in the 3 weeks before this juried show.

Conceptual: The title begs the following questions; what space? The room, in an institution? Whose space? The figure’s own head space?  Or the space between the chair back slats over which a piece cloth is draped? Why does the figure seem  to focus on this?

Perceptual: The narrowly painted border is the painting’s frame of reference.  Then negative space created by the figure is worked on in relation to this frame. For power in the painting, the strong value contrasts/ limited colours of the figure are contrasted with medium light values and mid/neutralised colour contrasts.

I have a dialogue with all my paintings and in dealing with their conceptual needs, perceptual elements fall into place. Though the figure here is not gender specific, I’m talking with my late father. There are unresolved issues here, but I want it to be a positive painting. So, the while the soft tones reflect the vagueness of unanswered questions which hang in the air, I finished the work by powering up the high value contrast of the silhouette against the sunlight. This fills the comfortable looking room with warmth and hopefully, future optimism.

2. What do you think of the art scene in Mississauga? Where do you see it heading in the next ten years?

It appears to have created a strong base, with public consensus, that could go further with international interest in edgy and  avant garde art forms and a variety of themed occasions such as festivals, conferences and hands on studio events.

3. What advice would you give young people who want to become artists?

Have something to say, practise every day, ditto for drawing, learn how to use an extensive artistic tool properly, always network.

4. What do you have lined up after the VAM Juried Show? For people interested in finding more of your artwork, do you have a website, blog, Twitter account or gallery?

Exceptionally well painted, Eileen. I love the colours. Interesting way of reversing colours – body in gray and the surrounding area in pinkish-orange. As a viewer I interpret the scene in this way: the person is troubled, dark thoughts going through person’s mind, while the world around him/her is colourful not at all reflecting reality of the person. Great work, congratulations.
